Saint Dymphna was born to a devout Christian mother and pagan father in 7th century Ireland. She was only 14 when she gave a vow of chastity to Christ. Not long after this, her beloved mother passed, causing her father to rapidly lose mental stability.
 
Due to evil advisors and his own ill mental health, Dymphna’s father, who had been advised to remarry, was convinced he should marry his own daughter who carried resemblance to her mother. Dymphna learned of this plan and with the help of a priest and two servants, escaped by boat to Belgium, where she eventually built a hospital for the poor and sick.
 
She was found by her father, and died at the age of 15 after refusing to marry him, when he drew his sword and struck her. Dymphna received a crown of martyrdom and is known as the patron saint for those suffering with nervous and mental afflictions.
