Saint Francis of Assisi was known as a Catholic friar, founder of the Franciscans, and one of the most venerated figures in Christianity. He was inspired to live a life of poverty and loved nature, while also caring for the environment and animals.
 
Saint Francis believed that animals were just as much God’s creatures as the human race, and that they should be cared for and protected. He originally came from wealth but devoted his life to his ministry to the poor and underprivileged.
