St Christopher Mini Wooden Retablo
St. Christopher Retablo - Patron of Travelers, Truck Drivers, Ferryboat Men; Invoked against Nightmares, Water Perils and Plague.
St. Christopher was born in Canaan. The most famous legend connected to the saint recounts that after converting to Christianity, he devoted his life to carrying travelers across a river. One day he carried an unknown young boy across a river after which the boy revealed himself as Christ. Because of his help to travelers, he became the patron saint of travelers.
In the iconography of the Western Church, the saint is often depicted as a giant with a staff carrying the infant Jesus across a river on his shoulders. The child became heavier and heavier. Christopher thought he would sink. When he reached the other side the child turned into the grown Christ who said, "You have now carried the weight of the world upon your shoulders. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work."
A Retablo is a devotional painting derived from traditional Catholic Church Art, often on rectangular wooden board that illustrate holy images such as Christ, the Virgin Mary or Saints.
