Francis Xavier was born in 1506, in Navarra, Spain. When he was 19 years old he went to study in Paris where he met Ignatius of Loyola, with whom he became a great friend, and with whom he founded the Society of Jesus. Later, he has ordained a priest and, at the request of the Portuguese King John III, was sent as a missionary to the East.

Francis Xavier travelled to many countries such as Mozambique, Indonesia, India, and Japan, and dedicated his life to helping the poorest and sickest people, to spread the word of Jesus, and to convert thousands of people to Christianity.

He was considered the “Apostle of the East”. Francis Xavier was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1619 and canonised in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV.

His feast day is 3 December.
