St Matthew the Evangelist was a tax collectorin Capernaum, Palestine, and had a life of power and wealth. One day while working, Jesus called him to be His follower. Without hesitation, Matthew left everything he had and followed Jesus. He began to preach His word through Judea, Persia and Ethiopia.
St Matthew was one of the twelve apostles. He wrote the first Gospel in which he describes a part of Jesus' life as well ass His teachings. St Matthew is symbolized as an angel and his feast day is September 21st.
